Canola Meal
|
Canola meal is a widely used protein source in dairy, beef, swine, and poultry feeds. It contains a minimum of 36% protein by weight. It has an excellent balance of essential amino acids such as methionine and lysine. In addition, canola meal is a rich source of B and E vitamins and essential minerals compared to other meals such as soybean. The low molecular weight of the major protein results in very low antigenicity resulting in minimal food allergy. Canola meal is obtained after removal of most of the oil from the whole seeds. Heat-processed canola meal is used solely as a protein-rich livestock feed and is not consumed by humans. Canola meal is also a high-quality organic fertilizer. It is a source of nitrogen, phosphorous, and trace materials, and is used by gardeners who prefer vegetable meals as a source of nutrients. Canola meal breaks down rapidly and will supply balanced nutrients throughout the growing season. For this reason, it is often purchased by mushroom producers. Canola meal is a viable protein replacement for other oilseed meals. It handles like soybean meal, and requires no special equipment. It can be stored indefinitely, provided it is kept dry. Major factors to consider with expeller pressed meal are the high energy, low moisture, essential proteins and favourable amino acid profile over typical canola meal.
